Barry C. Nisbet is a retired Canadian Army Infantry Sergeant who served over 15 years with the 1st Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) based in Petawawa, Ontario. Enlisting in 1997 and retiring in 2012, he completed five operational tours: Kosovo in 1999, Bosnia in 2003, and Afghanistan in 2005, 2006, and 2010.
In 2003, Barry became the first Canadian Soldier at the rank of Corporal to graduate from the U.S. Army Ranger School - paving the way for more to follow. Over the years, he earned numerous qualifications, including basic parachutist, mortarman, machine gunner, reconnaissance patrolman, and basic through advanced sniper. He went on to teach many basic sniper courses training soldiers from both the regular infantry and CANSOFCOM.
In 2006, during his second deployment to Afghanistan with Task Force 3-06, he served as and sniper and took part in the intense fighting of Operation Medusa. He was awarded the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation for his actions during that tour for saving the life of a seriously wounded comrade. Barry returned to Afghanistan, Task Force 1-10, for a third time in 2010 as a sniper detachment commander, concluding his operational service before retiring in 2012.
